The work, commonly known as The Inverted Church, is correctly titled ‘Device to Root Out Evil’ and is a copy of the original which was made for the Venice Biennial art exhibition in the 1990’s and
has subsequently moved on through the States and Canada.
Knowing the title it’s possible to see the symbolism in the work with the church spire burrowing into the ground and many people have found it a little too controversial. What do you think?
If you’re on your way to the Es Baluard modern art museum nearby, take a look at the upside-down church and make sure you have your photo taken by it!
This church is not exact duplicate of the original one. Perhaps a native Mallorca atrist errected this protoype, just out side the ABA Art Contemporani (www.abaart.com)
This church follows the style of the Calgary, but it is significantly different than those of North America. Wooden frame is used along with steel. The windows are covered by white board from inside. This one is colorful. Colorful corrugated sheet is used instead of colorful transparent Venetian glasses.
